I spent 10s of thousands of dollars, maxed out my credit cards, ignored my family and almost lost my wife and kids before I finally made it on the internet. See How I Did It...... Everything turned out great and for that I am greatful and fairly lucky. I built this blog so you wouldnt have to make the same mistakes I did. You are going to have hundreds and hundreds of emails telling you why you need to join the next big thing. The problem isn't usually with the program but rather with the support you are given.
Please don't trust anyone who tells you that earning online is easy. While it can be fun it does require a lot of hard work but is also very rewarding.
If they tell you that you can make money for free then I smell a rotten fish. You see while there is usually some money needed it doesn't have to be much.
These are just a few of the mistakes I made along with dozens of others. I ended up learning the hard way and I at least ask you to read my story before getting involved in anything online.
This Is Where My Story Starts.....
In the year 2000 I was lucky enough to get a brand new computer for Christmas. On top of that I was also lucky enough to get the internet hooked up. This was the best day of my life. I had heard so much about the internet, had been on it a little at my sisters place but now I could surf the World Wide Web.
Of course and probably to no surprise I was on the internet for countless hours. This was great. I could go anywhere I wanted and explore anything I wanted.
One day my wife and I were uptown getting groceries and I saw a sign that went something like this.

At first I didn't think much and then remembered I have internet now and I really didn't know you could make money on the internet. I took one of the flyers and couldn't wait to get home. Finally after what seemed like an eternity I got home and of course I headed straight to the computer and went to the site.
It was amazing. The sales page had me sold in no time. All I had to do was pay a small fee of I think it was 50 bucks and I would be on my way to internet riches. I wasted no time. I paid the fee, got access to the website and was in my glory. All the stories, testimonials. I knew I was going to be rich.
My mentor did contact me quite quickly in fact. We had some great conversations. She gave me some great links to watch that even got me more hyped about what I was doing. Well she gave me a chance to let all that settle in and then hit me up while I was at the peak of my excitement.....
She told me that if I really wanted to do well with the company I should start thinking of some advertising products. Well I thought to myself. Of course, how could I do anything without advertising. I should have clued in when she told me they had the advertising in different packages. I wanted this to work so I ordered the super duper, heavy duty or whatever you want to call it package. Yep whipped out the ole credit card and ordered 1000 dollars worth of advertising materials. Now all I could do is sit and wait. Well about 5 days later a huge box showed up at my door. I just looked at it. I knew once I got into this I would be able to start getting rich. It was like opening a Christmas present and finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow all together. I couldn't believe the amount of stuff inside.
Oh It Definately Doesn't End There!
Well it was time to start advertising. I did everything I was told. Put flyers under windshield wipers, left them in public washrooms, put my cards in phone booths and stapled flyers to every power pole in town. It took all weekend and I even had my boys helping me and excited. So Sunday night all we had to do was sit back and wait for the phone to ring. Well Monday morning it did ring. It was the local police telling me to stop littering the city with my flyers. Well this was disheartening to say the least. However the next call came and it was someone ordering 50 dollars worth of product. Well I was on my way, at least that's what I figured.
My mentor had me all excited about my little sale. I was excited enough that when she told me I should make sure I sell to my family and friends I started a bad cycle of a lot of people avoiding me. I did however tear out my credit card and get started on an autoship because after all it was important that I knew how the product worked to be able to sell it.
Well Im not sure how but next my mentor convinced me that things would sell a lot better if I had product on hand. So guess what. I paid 3000 dollars for the biggest kit I could buy. Well this was very quickly the beginning of the end. I quickly realized I wasnt going to sell this stuff and until this day I can still find some of the product around my house. I tried to get ahold of my mentor but I guess she realized she had milked me dry so she stopped returning my calls and emails
I Should Have Quit There
ya most people would have cut their losses and quit right then. Nope not me though. Even though I should have. You see this story still gets worse before it gets better. I knew I screwed up but I also was sure it could never happen again. I learned the hard way and there was no way I could get taken again.
I was wrong.....
Yep, soon after I got back on line determined to find something that really works. I found dozens of great programs that I signed up to, got my autoship going and carried on. Jeez, pretty soon my house had drinks, potions, jerky, chocolates and numerous other things laying around all over the place. I was working my butt off just to try and cover the autoships on all these products but it never happened. I bought leads, guaranteed sign ups, traffic, none of it worked. I was so far in debt now and wasn't sure what I was going to do until my wife made it quite clear what I was going to do.
The Wrath Of Jackie
Well obviously Jackie is my wife and when I say the wrath of Jackie it is all in joking. Jackie is the greatest lady a guy could be married to. However I am sure she was doubting me for a while. Well she had enough. She sat back as long as she could and finally decided it was time to step in and put a stop to things. The credit cards were out of control as well as my spending and she just wasn't going to take it anymore.
Jackie actually threatened me that if I didn't quit being so foolish she would be taking the kids and leaving. I knew at that point she meant it. Over 10 000 in credit card debt all from internet marketing that didn't go so well.
I knew better than to plead with her and trust me deep down inside I knew she was right. This was getting ridiculous. I was still sure that there was money to be made on the internet but I also knew I wouldn't be figuring it out. So that day I shut off the computer and actually never turned it on again for at least 6 months.
So What Happened Now?
Well I went on living a normal life. I spent more time with my kids, focused on my off line career which has been great to us and even got to spend more time fishing. I managed to get the credit cards all payed off and thought internet marketing was just a bad memory.
Well after 6 months I decided to go back on the internet. My wife was watching closely so in total I stayed away from any money making for over 2 years. I would take a peek here and there. I saw a lot of neat things but I new better and decided to stay away.
We finally threw away most of the products and advertising from my failed experiences and moved on with our lives. There was still something bugging me though. I knew that there was money being made on the internet and I wanted a part of it. I knew I needed one more chance. So I set out to devise a plan for one more chance.
Time Was Very Limited
Well this is what I came up with. I wasn't sure if it would work but I had to try. I asked my wife to come and sit down with me so we could talk. Well the first thing I did was hand her my credit card. Oh ya I could see the weirdness in her eyes. Well I decided it was best to not beat around the bush and just get it over with.
I asked her to just hear me out before getting cranky. I told her that I was sure I could still make a living on the internet. Well her cheeks instantly turned bright red in anger but she didn't say anything. I asked her to allow me two weeks to look around. I knew what I was looking for. I also told her that if I find what I want I will sit down and talk to her before doing anything. I then told her that if I didn't find something both of us could agree on in two weeks then I would never ever bring the subject up again.
Well I saw the brightness come out of her cheeks as she walked away and just said to me to go ahead. It took me a few minutes to figure out how this was so easy until I realized that I gave her the power. She could veto anything I brought up and I would have no say. Well that did suck but I had 2 weeks to find something killer enough that I could convince her.
Well I had two weeks, which does seem like a long time but in the real world it just flew by. I got to work to see if this time something would work.
Finally, A Break Through
Well day after day I just kept going through hundreds of online business opportunities. I did recognize some of the older ones I looked at before and then there were a lot of new ones of course. I found dozens that interested me and did the research. I was being smart this time. Checking the opportunities in scam reports, online forums and message boards. There were a ton of scams out there.
I also found a few that I know I would have signed up to if I would have had my credit card. What I hadn't found was that one opportunity that would catch my eye, pass all the tests and just maybe get past my wife. Well on day 11 I really thought my dream of earning online was quickly becoming extinct. I had found a few things that really seemed like they would work but I knew I wouldn't sell my wife on them.
I knew I didn't want MLM. I really didn't want my business to depend on referring people and I really didn't want to sell the latest potion, shake, drink, herb, pill or chocolates and beef jerky. I was starting to get a bit discouraged when I clicked on an Adwords ad about a company called Wealthy Affiliate.
Right off the bat I liked what I saw but I wasn't going to get too excited. I knew I had to do my homework and research. So the rest of the evening and the entire next day I went about trying to break down Wealthy Affiliate. Guess what, I couldn't find a bad thing about it anywhere on the internet. I found lots of great testimonials but absolutely nothing negative. I knew this is what I wanted to do but now I had to sell my wife.
What Happened When The Time Came?
The next morning I asked my wife to sit down so I could show her something. I saw the smirk on her face so I asked her to at least be open minded when I explained the process to her. She agreed.
So now did I not only have to sell Wealthy Affiliate I had to sell myself. I explained all the research I had done and everything I could to her. She was true to her word and she listened. Then when I was done without saying a word she got up and walked away. That was it. I thought my dream was finally over. This would be the end of a bad circle and I would have to keep my word.
A couple minutes later she came walking back and handed me my credit card. She told me to sign up and she also told me that I had six months. I couldn't pay for anything else. There would be no buying leads, guaranteed traffic or sign ups. If after six months I wasn't in profit I would have to once and for all walk away. I promised her, grabbed the credit card and got signed up before she could change her mind.
So What Finally Happened?
Well it would be easy to turn this into a rags to riches story but that's not exactly what happened. I'm not making millions of dollars but I have managed to get my online earnings to about 1500 a month in less than a year. My wife trusts me again especially when she gets the cheques from the mail box.
I'm not saying that Wealthy Affiliate isn't without its flaws. Like I found and still find the website builder difficult to use. There are also a few other small glitches but the nice thing is that when I get stuck there is always some one who is willing to help.
I have now stepped up my marketing by partnering with a fine young lady who has the same vision as myself. Becoming millionaires would be great but we are realistic and we understand that hype is just that. We are working hard and doubling our efforts in order to succeed in Wealthy Affiliate.
So why do you need to make the same mistakes I made. Its so much easier now for anyone else. In fact I absolutely don't want to see anyone make those mistakes. To be honest there was a time when I did think I was going to lose everything. You never have to feel that way because you can skip all the terrible happenings and get into Wealthy Affiliate Immediately.
